Would you buy a house if property taxes were 10%+ of the price?

One of the reasons we love Blockshopper is how it lays bare the truth about property taxes and how they impact real estate purchase prices across the country.

Consider this house in Calumet City, Illinois , just south of Chicago (famous as the home of Elwood Blues, and cops once
thought they had Hannibal Lecter caught here). It sold last month for
$17,000-- and carries property taxes of $1,969 per year, or $165 per month.

Here's a parallel: that $250,000 house you want has a $29,000 annual tax bill. Or the $500,000 home has one that is $55,000.

We don't suppose the good government leaders of Cook County plan to contact Ms. Harriel (the buyer) to offer to lower her taxes anytime soon. Maybe a property tax appeals lawyer should-- lots more injustice where that came from.
